EMDR Therapist in South Norfolk

When the past still hurts, EMDR can help you process what happened and move forward.

When something has happened to you — but your mind still feels as though it's happening now

If difficult experiences from the past are still affecting how you feel today, you don't have to face them alone.

EMDR can help you process distressing memories and experiences, reducing their emotional impact and helping you feel safer, calmer and more able to move forward.

Paula offers personalised EMDR therapy in South Norfolk, supporting people experiencing trauma, PTSD and other distressing experiences.

Some experiences stay with us long after the event itself has passed.

You may find yourself reacting strongly to something that reminds you of the past. You might experience anxiety, distressing memories, intrusive thoughts, heightened alertness or a feeling that you simply can't move on.

Sometimes you can understand intellectually that you're safe now, but your emotional response hasn't caught up.

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — is a structured therapeutic approach that can help you process distressing or traumatic experiences so they become less emotionally overwhelming.

Before beginning EMDR, Paula will take time to understand your circumstances, what you want help with and whether EMDR is an appropriate approach for you. Therapy can then be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances.

How can EMDR help?

EMDR is particularly associated with the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress. It may be appropriate where a distressing experience continues to affect how you think, feel or respond in the present. The NHS recognises EMDR as one of the psychological treatments used for PTSD.

You may want to explore EMDR if you are experiencing:

  • Distressing or traumatic memories
  • Anxiety or fear following a difficult experience
  • Intrusive memories or images
  • Strong emotional reactions to particular situations or reminders
  • A sense of being stuck in the past
  • Negative beliefs about yourself following an experience
  • Difficulties moving forward after a significant event

You don't necessarily need to have a formal diagnosis to talk to Paula about whether EMDR may be appropriate for you.

What happens during EMDR?

EMDR isn't about simply talking through an experience again and again.

The approach involves recalling aspects of a distressing experience while using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements. This forms part of a structured therapeutic process designed to help you process the memory and reduce the intensity of the distress associated with it.

You remain in control throughout the process.

You don't have to explain everything perfectly

One of the reasons people seek EMDR is because talking about a difficult experience in detail can feel overwhelming.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or which therapy you need.

The first step is simply having a conversation about what you're experiencing.

Paula can help you explore whether EMDR, hypnotherapy, talking therapy, coaching or another approach may be more appropriate.

A holistic approach to emotional wellbeing

At Meadowsweet Holistic Health, EMDR is offered within a broader therapeutic practice.

Paula Stone has more than 20 years' experience working with adults and young people and has trained in EMDR techniques and applications, EMDR Accelerated Practitioner work, advanced hypnotherapy, CBT approaches, post-trauma work, mindfulness and other therapeutic approaches.

This means the focus isn't simply on applying a particular technique.

It's about understanding you, your circumstances and what you want to change.

Where appropriate, different therapeutic approaches may be considered as part of a personalised programme.
